Hungary’s President János Áder visited memorial sites of the 1848-49 Hungarian revolution and freedom fight in Szekler Land, in central Romania, on Tuesday. Áder, who arrived in Transylvania for a three-day unofficial visit on Monday, viewed the collection of the Szekler National Museum in Sfantu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), including the only surviving cannon out of around 70 produced by national hero Áron Gábor.
In Targu Secuiesc (Kézdivásárhely) Áder laid a wreath at Gábor’s statue and gave an impromptu speech, expressing thanks to the local Hungarian community for keeping the memory of revolutionary leaders alive.
In Siculeni (Mádéfalva), the president laid a wreath on the memorial of the 1764 massacre. The heinous crime was committed against Szeklers by the mercenaries of Habsburg Queen Maria Theresa.
