Puccini: Tosca, Hungarian State Opera, Budapest, 21 March

Tosca was an eagerly awaited piece, but its eventual reception was lukewarm. It was only gradually that this fast-paced work, often called an action opera, became a box-office success. Géza Csáth, who wrote about it a few years after the Italian premiere, credited Puccini with a comprehensive and thorough knowledge of theatre, music and the extremely complex psychological processes of reception.
“Puccini has been the only one to have completely fathomed the psychological requirements and the secrets of the effects of musical drama. This completeness does not equal perfection. All it means is that Puccini has found the ultimate secret of musical drama writing, which even more superior musicians have failed to find.
The key to this secret is the psychological issue of how to proportion music, drama and acting, so that the viewer-listener’s sense of satisfaction can be undisturbed, and how to construct and orchestrate this kind of music."
The effect of Tosca can be particularly powerful when performed by charismatic singer-actors, such as Csilla Boros, Mihály Kálmándi, and the guest of the show, José Cura. Now is the chance to make up for a lost opportunity if you missed the Argentinian tenor’s phenomenal interprtation of Cavaradossi in Szeged a few years ago.
