Köver Says Hungary’s House Speaker Is Post He’d Welcome Again

Commenting on the outcome of the April 6 parliamentary election, he said the results demonstrated voters’ appreciation of government efforts to address real problems and stand up for these beyond the borders, too. He noted that after a period of nearly one hundred years, all Hungarians within the country’s borders and beyond had had the chance to cast their votes in Hungary’s election.
The new house rules will provide a framework for a stricter but more relaxed speed of legislation. Some of the reforms and changes are only just starting; the transformation of state administration has not yet been completed and there are many tasks ahead in education, he said. Detailed debates will be carried out by committees with 35-40 members, but they will remain open to public scrutiny and the opportunity for debate will not be restricted in any way, he added.
Commenting on European Union procedures against Hungary, he said he understood the feelings of many Hungarians who say “it would be better outside”. “But this would be inconceivable,” he said.
The price would be so high that it would do more harm than good.” Hungary needs to find allies for its battles, but if a majority cannot be achieved then it is necessary to adapt to the common rules even if they are considered unwise and “double standards are applied.”
The sweeping majority of Hungarians would not want to see Hungary quit the EU because they understand that the several billions of forints in development support are unavoidable for Hungary’s development, Kövér said. Moves by the bureaucrats in Brussels actually work to the benefit of radical nationalist Jobbik in Hungary and other Euro-sceptic parties abroad, he said.
