Jobbik Raises Questions Over Casino Concessions In Hungary Awarded To Vajna
The radical nationalist Jobbik party has called on the government to make public the criteria under which it awarded a casino concession to the company of a government commissioner. Jobbik lawmaker Enikő Hegedűs criticized the economy ministry for its recent decision to issue permits to Andrew Vajna’s company, the Las Vegas Casino Ltd, for operating another five casinos in Budapest and in surrounding Pest County.

Vajna, a one-time Hollywood producer, is the government commissioner for the country’s film industry.

The ministry awarded the permits to Vajna’s company without a tender, qualifying it as “reliable”, Hegedűs told a press conference. The state asset management law requires transparency of such companies and bans them if they are registered off shore, she noted.

’s company last year had got tax relief of 1.6 billion forints (EUR 5.3m) based on just one casino, Hegedűs said, demanding to know the amount missing in unpaid taxes from state coffers on the five additional casino concessions won by Vajna’s company and how this compared to the total debt of Hungary’s hospitals.
