Hungary’s Foreign Minister Summons Norwegian Ambassador Over Norway Grants
Hungary’s foreign minister, Tibor Navracsics, on Tuesday summoned Norway’s ambassador to Budapest, Tove Skarstein, with a request for information about statements connected with the Norway Grants. Navracsics expressed hope that talks between the Hungarian and Norwegian governments on June 12 would lead to a suitable outcome and the resolution of disputed issues.

Last Wednesday, Hungarian ambassador to Oslo Géza Jeszenszky was summoned to the Norwegian foreign ministry in connection with the Norway Grants. Before his meeting Jeszenszky told Magyar Nemzet daily there had been “a regrettable dispute between the Hungarian and Norwegian governments.

We hope, however, that this will be settled swiftly.”

The Ökotárs foundation, which handles the funding, earlier said that the director of the Brussels-based Financial Mechanism Office, the decision-making authority for the EEA Grants, had told cabinet chief János Lázár that Hungarian government bodies had no right of control over NGO programmes within the Norway Grants scheme.
