200,000 Vulnerable Children In Hungary
There are around 200,000 vulnerable children in Hungary and around 6,000 become victims of violent crime, Anita Herczegh, Hungary’s First Lady, said on Wednesday.

Not only are they unable to exercise their rights as a child but their basic human rights are seriously harmed, too, in spite of the child-protection law, Herczegh told a conference organised by the Fundamental Rights Ombudsman’s Office and UNICEF Hungary to mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Herczegh, the event’s chief patron, noted that in 1991 Hungary ratified the convention which declares that children’s vulnerability, exposure and fragility entitle them to special rights.

She noted member states’ obligation to submit progress reports concerning achievements in children’s rights, adding that more must be done than simply revealing abuses.

“We will be a little more satisfied only if we can report real improvements in the next 25 years,” she said.
