Hungary's MTVA Executive Fabricated News
The Municipal Court yesterday upheld a claim by news website Index that Dániel Papp – currently head of news programming at state media manager MTVA – was guilty of fabricating news reports.

Index made the allegation last month when reporting that Papp had falsified a 2011 report on Green Party MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit.

After Cohn-Bendit criticised Hungary’s new media law, Papp produced a video indicating that he had walked out of the room when asked about alleged child abuse.

However, Index obtained footage showing that the MEP had denied the allegation and re-mained in the room for some time afterwards.

The court ruled that Papp’s report amounted to a distortion of reality and that Papp, as a public figure, must tolerate such opinions as expressed by Index.

The ruling is open to appeal.
