Hungary’s Parlt Scraps Statute Of Limitations For Child Sex Crimes
Parliament has approved an amendment to the criminal code to prevent the lapse of statutory punishments for sexual crimes towards minors. Under the motion submitted by ruling Fidesz, statutory punishments with a sentence of more than five years for sexual crime committed against a person younger than 18 at the time of the crime will not lapse.

Fidesz lawmaker Gabriella Selmeczi said earlier that the case of a former secondary school teacher accused of sexually abusing his students had shed light on shortcomings in criminal legislation since the perpetrator could not be sentenced due to the statute of limitations.

The amendment was passed unanimously with 164 votes. The legislation will take effect 30 days following its official publication.
