Hungarian Nat Roma Org Must Take Political Responsibility If Graft Allegations Proven
Allegations of graft connected with the National Roma Self-Government must be cleared up and the organisation headed by Flórián Farkas must take political responsibility if it transpires that its people “stole, cheated or lied,” the government office chief said at a regular government press conference.

Equally the people who filed complaints against the Roma Self-Government must also bear responsibility if it turns out that their claims prove unfounded, János Lázár said, adding that in this case they will have tried to discredit and harm programmes useful to the Roma community.

He said it was dangerous to shake public confidence when what is at stake is a most sensitive social issue involving attempts to iron out social disparities.

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) called on Farkas, who is also a Fidesz lawmaker and government commissioner, to resign. Referring to an investigation into the organisation’s “Híd” programme by the tax authority (NAV), DK accused Farkas of stealing several hundreds of millions of forints from the fund for helping the Roma get jobs.
