Opposition Parties In Hungary Criticise MNB
The opposition parties expect an explanation from the MNB which last week announced its purchase of the only Titian painting in Hunga-ry for Ft 4.5 billion. LMP said it is outrageous that the central bank has bought the painting Madonna and Child with St. Paul from profits gained by converting foreign-currency loans. The Democratic Coalition recalled that it had complained to the European Commission about the central bank’s spending sprees.

Dialogue also expects an explanation or else it will file a report for misuse of funds.

The party said the painting was appraised at Ft 1.4 billion six years ago and has proba-bly not tripled in value in that time. Dialogue demands an appraisal on which the MNB based its decision.

The painting will be displayed at the Na-tional Gallery.
