Forum On Planned Immigrant Shelter In Hungary
An unscheduled public forum was held in Sormás in southwest Hungary where state secretary Tibor Pogácsás briefed local residents about plans to set up a local reception centre for immigrants. After consultations with the local mayor, Pogácsás said the temporary facility would be made up of containers and tents. Construction work is to start in late August or early September, he added.

During the meeting behind closed doors between Pogácsás, independent Mayor Edit Pőcze and ruling Fidesz lawmaker Péter Cseresnyés, nearly 100 local residents gathered in front of the building in protest against the planned facility.

At that point, Pogácsás decided to hold the public forum after the meeting.

Deputy Mayor Zoltán Póczai criticised the lack of preliminary consultations between the government and local residents and asked for guarantees that the camp would not be moved to inner areas of the village later in the future.

He said that locals fear that migrants “with a military past” will act aggressively and they will “rob and kill” to support themselves.
