Demographic Decline Speeds Up In Hungary
- 24 Sep 2015 9:00 AM
The death rate has exceeded the birth rate in Hungary so far this year, the Central Statistics Office reported on Wednesday. In the first seven months of the year 52,235 babies were born, 352 or 0.7% more than in the same period of last year. However, the number of deaths totalled 78,709, which exceeded the figures of January-July 2014 by 5,163, or 7.0%.
As a result, the natural decline rose from 21,663 in January-July 2014 to 26,474 in the first seven months of this year.
An influenza epidemic could have been instrumental in the higher mortality rate.
