Hungary’s Foreign Minister: Migrant Rights Important
The rights of migrants are "very important", Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said, adding this is one reason why Hungary has proposed EU financing for refugee camps in countries neighbouring Syria. Commenting on critical remarks by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy concerning the Hungarian government’s migration policy, Szijjártó said he agreed with Rajoy’s remarks on the importance of the rights of refugees.

Hungary’s proposal on the EU financing refugee camps in countries neighbouring Syria is about providing better services for the people in the camps and also their return to the homeland after the conflicts end, Szijjártó said.

Rajoy told radio channel Onda Cero that he disagreed with Hungary’s use of water cannon and tear gas in clashes between migrants and police at the Serbian border.

He said people and their basic rights are paramount. Asked whether all asylum-seekers should receive asylum, he answered in the affirmative. Asylum is “in the genes of European civilisation”.

The politically persecuted and people fleeing wars deserve attention and support, he added. Szijjártó’s statement also notes that Spain started building a fence in the nineties to stop migrants entering the Spanish enclave Ceuta, in northern Africa, and this fence has been enhanced several times since.

An initial single wire fence which was 2.5m tall has since been made into a parallel double fence standing 6m tall and enforced by significant border patrols, it added.
