Turkey is ready to finance the costs of restoring the mosque and minaret in Szigetvár, site of the death of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, ambassador Sakir Fakili told the town’s planning council on Monday. The remains of Suleiman’s grave were found earlier this year near Szigetvár, where the Ottoman leader died during a siege of the castle in 1566.
Szigetvár could become a place of pilgrimage for Turks and could attract tens of thousands of tourists annually.
