UNHCR Calls On V4 Leaders To Show Solidarity With Refugees
The UNHCR has called on leaders of the Visegrad Group of countries to show greater solidarity with refugees who are trying to find safe harbour in Europe from wars and extremism.

Last year, the V4 countries accepted 25,000 refugees, or 0.125 percent of the 20 million refugee total, the regional headquarters of the UN body based in Budapest said in a statement on Thursday, ahead of a Feb. 15 summit in Prague of the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to discuss the migrant crisis together with Bulgaria and Macedonia.

It noted that last year Hungary received 177,000 asylum requests and the vast majority of these people left the country in a matter of days.

The other three V4 countries registered 14,000 asylum requests altogether.

“The time has come for central European leaders to show an example and commit themselves to those families who have escaped from wars and human-rights violations and who are in need of help,” the statement said.
