Downtown Hostel For Homeless Closed
Budapest city council voted yesterday to shut down a provisional hostel for 64 women on József nádor tér in the Fifth District. Instead, a temporary 64-person hostel will be installed in a floor of a Ninth District workers hotel.

Deputy mayor Gábor Bagdy said it is not a good idea to have a homeless shelter in the heart of the city.

Democratic Coalition politician Erzsébet Gy. Németh pointed out that somebody wants to build a hotel in the area. Recent reports say the prime minister’s son-in-law István Tiborcz will be among the investors.

The square is now a construction zone as the city is building an underground parking garage.

Mayor István Tarlós accused Németh of “whipping up an atmosphere” by suggesting that the construction of a hotel is a factor in Wednesday’s decision.
