Áder Urges Remaining Eu Member States To Ratify Paris Climate Accord
- 29 Sep 2016 9:00 AM
The Paris agreement will enter into force thirty days after at least 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions have ratified it. In his letter, Áder said that a total of sixty countries have approved the agreement up until September 21, including the US and China.
But the other condition for the deal to enter into force has not yet been met, as the countries that have ratified the agreement do not yet make up 55% of global gas emissions.
The accord still needs 7% more of the world’s emissions to enter into effect, Áder said. He said it was the EU’s ambitious commitments that had made last year’s Paris climate summit a success, adding that the right thing for the EU to do now was to be a leader in implementing the agreement.
