Budapest Ritmo: World Music Festival, Mupa, 14 October
- 13 Oct 2016 9:01 AM
Kondi Band is the duo of a blind musician from Sierra Leone and an American DJ; "kondi” is the instrument that is known elsewhere in Africa as kalimba or mbira. Following their first encounter via YouTube, they crowdfunded the release of their first record, and by now this unlikely collaboration can already be heard at leading festivals, including the Budapest Ritmo.
The story of the Angolan-Portuguese party band, Throes and the Shine, or that of super-positive Japanese singer Maia Barouh and her French band, is also about encounters.
Ukrainian punk trombonist Ruslan Trochynskyi and his Estonian band, Svjata Vatra, also draw their power from various cultures.
By contrast, the story of the Finnish Tuuletar is altogether different: they gave their first concert in Hungary a few months ago, and their folk beatboxing drove the audience so wild they had to repeat the whole concert on the same night. Budapest Ritmo now provides them with an opportunity to capture a far larger audience.
