Video: Dangerous Oil Pollution Found On Danube Near Budapest

Thousands of square metres of water are covered in thick oil after a large amount of used oil was poured into a rainwater gutter along the Danube.
On Saturday, water authorities received a report of oil pollution in Szigetszentmiklós, at the outlet of a rainwater canal and in the reeds.
The situation was particularly dangerous because the canal leads into the Ráckeve (Soroksár) branch of the Danube.
The Central Danube Valley Water Directorate found “a large quantity of dark, dense hydrocarbon derivative at the estuary, which is present along the entire length of the canal, as well as in the vegetation on a 2,000m2 area with 2-5cm thickness”.
The water specialists managed to prevent the contamination of the entire branch of the river.
Disposal of large quantities of hazardous materials is expensive, so there is a temptation to illegally dump them in nature.
If they are poured into a river, they will be washed down by water, and investigation becomes difficult.
Industrial divers measured the size of the contaminated area with a high-precision geodetic GPS instrument, and concluded that the oil contamination apparently came from a rainwater gutter in Szigetszentmiklós on Csepel Island south of Budapest.
Based on their findings, a rehabilitation plan for 1,836m2 of contaminated land has been completed.
