Hunter Who Shot Roaming Wolf Dead in Hungary May Get Three Years in Prison
A hunter has shot dead the wolf fitted with a tracker that had wandered from Switzerland to Hungary in recent weeks.

The culprit, who shot the creature near Hidasnémeti, Borsod county, could be sentenced to three years in prison, as wolves are a highly protected species, according to the Agriculture Ministry.

The wolf, born in 2021, had been fitted with a tracking device in Switzerland in March of last year.

It began an eastward trek last June and reached Hungary this year, staying for weeks in the outskirts of Budapest.

The creature then roamed into Nógrád and Heves counties before reaching Borsod county in the past few days, where it was killed.

Police neither confirmed nor denied the report that the wolf had been killed, but it is said that the National Bureau of Investigation is investigating the matter.
