Young Wolf Wanders 700km from Switzerland to Hungary
A young male wolf wandered in the past year from the region of Surselva in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland almost as far as Budapest, the wildlife conservation organisation Gruppe Wolf Schweiz announced.

The wolf, born in 2021, was tagged by a game warden last spring.

The group said it is natural that young wolves leave their pack before the age of 22 months and look for their own territory.

They often cover big distances for this purpose, but it is rare that their journey can be documented so accurately.

The wildlife organisation finds it a minor miracle that the wolf survived, as it had to cross numerous motorways and rivers to reach Hungary.

The creature travelled 700km as the crow flies, but in reality a much greater distance, as it did not proceed in a straight line.

It roamed as far as the northern outskirts of Vienna before it changed tack and eventually entered Hungary south of Lake Fertő.
