Why Was Flag Flown at Half-Mast in Front of Hungarian Parliament on Saturday?
Hungary’s flag was hoisted and lowered to half-mast in front of Parliament on Saturday morning, in commemoration of the anniversary of the defeat of the 1956 uprising against Soviet rule

The flag was lowered in a military ceremony, with House Speaker László Kövér and Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Ferenc Kajári attending.

Addressing a commemoration in Veszprém, in western Hungary, the state secretary for church and minority relations said that “the anniversary of the crushing of our wonderful and uplifting revolution should remind us of the heroes and the innocent victims of the retribution”.

Tens of thousands and their families suffered and died as innocent victims, and the communists never apologised for these crimes, Miklós Soltész said.

“They have a peculiar approach towards their country, they hate it, betray it whenever they can, [as they did it] in Moscow in the past and as they do now in Brussels,” he added.

It is important for today’s young people to see clearly who the real criminals and the real perpetrators were in the past, Soltész said.
