Hungarian Talent Shines at BAFTA – Poor Things Wins Best Production Design

At the prestigious British Academy Film Awards gala, the BAFTA for Best Production Design was awarded to Hungarian set designer Zsuzsa Mihalek and her colleagues, Shona Heath and James Price, for their exceptional work on “Poor Things.”
Filmed in Budapest, the movie utilized the renowned Origo Studios as its central hub for production, alongside scenes captured at Korda Studios, showcasing the extensive talent and capabilities within Hungary’s film industry.
The award was accepted by Heath and Price during the ceremony, hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant, celebrating the collaborative efforts of the production team behind the scenes of this acclaimed film.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and featuring a star-studded cast including Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, “Poor Things” has received critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations across 11 categories, solidifying its status as a cinematic masterpiece.
“Poor Things” competed against notable titles such as “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Killers of the Flower Moon“, highlighting the film’s unique production design and the intricate work involved in bringing its vision to life.
The creation of “Poor Things” was a significant undertaking, involving hundreds of Hungarian professionals, further emphasizing the country’s contribution to the international film industry.
Besides Best Production Design, the film was awarded in 4 additional categories: Leading Actress for Emma Stone; Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design and Special Visual Effects.
This recognition at the BAFTA awards not only highlights the exceptional work of Mihalek and her team but also shines a light on Hungary’s importance on the filmmaking map in Europe.
