First Orthopedic Robotic Surgery Center Launched in Hungary

The institution’s orthopedic surgeons will be supported by the U.S.-developed ROSA robot, successfully used worldwide since 2018, writes Világgazdaság.
In a specially designed operating room, the center’s 20-strong team of trained surgeons – orthopedic surgeons and technicians – will use the ROSA surgical robot from the U.S. medical technology company Zimmer Biomet to perform more precise prosthetic implantations than ever before.
The robot has been used in just 80 sites in Europe, but in more than 1,500 sites globally, and its effectiveness has been proven in several clinical trials.
Zsolt Knoll, founding Medical Director of Emineo Private Hospital, said: “ROSA provides even our most experienced surgeons with comprehensive support that translates into tangible patient benefits in surgical outcomes.”
He added that Emineo is the first to offer robotic knee replacement surgery as an elective option alongside traditional surgery. Moreover, as a regional training center, it will also provide an opportunity for more practicing national orthopedic surgeons to become familiar with this future-proof technology that delivers outstanding clinical results.
Zsolt Knoll stressed that knee replacement is one of the most complex prosthetic procedures in orthopedic surgery. Due to the complexity of the knee joint, it requires extreme experience and precision from the surgeon performing the procedure.
The importance of the ROSA surgical robot lies in its 3D imaging during surgery, its tissue assessment based on patient-specific anatomical characteristics, assessed with perfect accuracy, and its cutting template, providing the surgeon with complete precision.
Not only will the procedure and prosthesis positioning be more precise than with traditional prosthetic surgery, but the patient is also guaranteed less surgical stress, comfortable, less risky, long-lasting use of the new knee joint, and faster recovery and rehabilitation. The specialist pointed out that international experience shows that the success rate of traditional knee replacement is 90-92 percent worldwide, with robotic assisted surgery adding an additional 5 percent.
It is important to be aware that the robot does not perform any of the procedures on its own. (The name itself is short for Robotic Surgical Assistant.) All decisions during robotic surgery are made by the surgeon in charge of the operation, including the decision to override a robot’s recommendations.
ROSA is in many ways a significant improvement over its competitors developed for surgical assistance. The robotic assistant performs a full tissue assessment before, during and after surgery, helping to achieve knee ligament balance with the least possible tissue damage and a sense of natural movement after surgical recovery.
It also generates 3D models and cutting guides from two-dimensional images, enabling highly accurate planning, surgical precision and a higher level of medical control.
All of this allows the robotic system to offer more reproducible results than ever before, while taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient.
It also guarantees that the prostheses incorporated, based on these individual values, will provide a low complication rate, high precision and comfort for the recovery and freedom of movement of the prosthetic patient.
The new robotic surgery technology will be available to the institution’s clients from August 2024.
