5,500 businesses apply for EV subsidies

Some 5,500 businesses have submitted applications for subsidies in a scheme to support purchases of EVs, the Energy Ministry said in a post on social media.

The companies have applied for the purchase of close to 6,400 vehicles, including around 1,400 electric LCVs.

Businesses may apply for grants of between HUF 2.8m and HUF 4m per vehicle, depending on battery capacity, in the programme funded from the European Union's REPowerEU. The scheme winds up in March.

Meanwhile, New Mercedes plant to start serial production in 2026 - minister

German car maker Mercedes-Benz's new plant in Kecskemet (C Hungary) will start serial production at the beginning of next year, doubling the company’s production capacity in Hungary, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjaro announced on Tuesday in Stuttgart.

"Annually 400,000 cars will roll off the production lines in Kecskemet after Mercedes' new factory begins serial production at the beginning of next year," Szijjarto said.

He noted that Mercedes is bringing the production of two model families based on a new platform to Hungary, making Kecskemet an important stronghold for the company's electromobility strategy.

The minister said that with the expanded capacity, 1m cars per year will be produced in Hungary, raising the automotive sector into an "elite club", as only five European countries are capable of this volume.

Szijjarto also said that negotiations are currently underway for new automotive industry developments and he hopes he will be able to report on specifics soon.
