Bird Aviary at Margaret Island in Budapest Has Been Renewed
As part of Budest Zoo's wildlife conservation efforts, they rescue native, protected, and strictly protected animals in Hungary that have been injured or otherwise require human assistance. Last year alone, the Wildlife Rescue Center provided a second chance at life for 2,606 rescued animals.

From Budapest Zoo Team:

Whenever possible, we rehabilitate and release these animals back into their natural habitat. However, some animals - especially those with severe traumatic injuries—cannot survive in the wild even after recovery.

Among birds, wing injuries are common, and in certain cases, flight ability cannot be fully restored. For these non-releasable birds, we provide long-term care. Many of them find a home at the Margaret Island Mini Zoo, where they continue to live in a safe, well-equipped environment.

For example, the storks residing there are all rescued birds that, despite their limited ability to fly, thrive and even raise chicks. The rescued birds of prey with flight impairments are housed in an aviary on the inner side of the zoo.

The Renovation of the Aviary

Originally built in 2002, when our zoo took over the management of the Margaret Island Mini Zoo, the aviary had suffered significant wear and tear over the past 23 years. Recognizing the need for a major renovation, we requested 1% income tax donations last year to support this project.

The renovation, which essentially involved constructing a brand-new aviary complex, was completed one and a half weeks ago. The new facility consists of three separate aviaries and a buffer zone, providing more spacious and modern living conditions for the birds.

Our team finished setting up the enclosures in recent days, and the first residents—including a dozen common buzzards, a white-tailed eagle, and an imperial eagle.

Thank You for Your Support!

We deeply appreciate everyone who contributed to this renovation by donating 1% of their income tax.

Your generosity has made this project possible! As we look ahead, we invite you to continue supporting us.

The next 1% tax donations we receive will be used to modernize the Savannah Enclosure, which was originally built in 2008. With your help, we can continue to provide the best possible care for our animals!
