Foreign Family Member Became One Millionth Visitor to Budapest Zoo
The Budapest Zoo welcomed its one millionth visitor this year on Thursday. The lucky coincidence was a three-member Croatian family.

The young couple arrived in Budapest with their nine-month-old daughter from a settlement near Bélovár. They said they will spend a few days in the Hungarian capital and, in addition to the zoo, will also visit the Advent market, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden told MTI.

The Croatian family was greeted by Director General Endre Sós at the main entrance, accompanied by a friendly large marten, which its caretaker led out to the gate on a leash to greet the one millionth visitor.

The director general presented a gift package with zoo memorabilia and a plush lemur, and then the zoo staff invited the family on a short behind-the-scenes tour.

The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is the country's most visited cultural institution and ticketed tourist attraction, with attendance exceeding one million people every year. Last year, 1,119,564 visitors were registered, and the Margaret Island Small Animal Park, also managed by the zoo, was visited by another 200,000. More than a fifth of the visitors come from abroad.
