Opera House in Budapest Under Auditors’ Scrutiny, Eiffel Workshop to Host Popular Operas
An ongoing audit of the Opera House may be behind the cancellation of a press conference called on March 21 to announce the productions and events planned for the Opera’s 142nd season.

The Culture and Innovation Ministry run by Balázs Hankó commissioned a noted auditing and consultancy company to examine the institution’s operations in 2025.

Observers surmise that the ministry did not want the Hungarian State Opera to commit itself to productions that could be affected by the outcome of the inquiry.

Opera House director Szilveszter Ókovács wrote on Facebook last month that the Eiffel Workshop House will host popular operas in the future instead of the Erkel Theatre, giving a glimpse of the productions due in the next season.

Among the major popular opera titles he listed were The Gypsy Baron, The Marriage of Figaro, The Barber of Seville, The Abduction from the Seraglio and The Magic Flute at the Eiffel venue.
