Soma Horváth said that the local government was able to allocate less than before, 67 million forints, for the carnival in this year's budget, and moreover, the tender grants were not implemented as expected.
Therefore, the city assembly voted for another 13 million forints in support of the largest historical carnival in Central Europe - said the deputy mayor, who added that without the donations from companies operating in the city - which finance a quarter of the carnival costs estimated at 160 million forints - the event would have been shorter and poorer in its cultural offering.
Soma Horváth also said that last year the Savaria Historical Carnival had more than 120 thousand visitors, and they expect similar interest this year.
Stefánia Grünwald, the managing director of Savaria Tourism Nonprofit Ltd, highlighted that almost all of the well-established, permanent locations will be open: the Historical Theme Park, the Wine Street, the Beer Square, the Street of Arts, the main stage and the Old Town Fair on the Main Square, the Carnival Theater and Thalia Garden, the Eastern Courtyard and the Champions Square.
In addition to these, 15 smaller locations await visitors, as many organizations are joining the carnival festivities this year: all member institutions of the Savaria Museum, the Jewish Community, the Diocese of Szombathely, the library, the archives, Szultánia and several private events.
The programs are opened by the carnival wine competition, the center of the historical programs, the camp site of the military and civilian tradition-preserving teams every year is the Historical Theme Park, where visitors to the Theme Park can learn about the battles and everyday life of the legionaries and gladiators of the Roman era, as well as horse archery, medieval knightly prowess or the era of the Turkish wars.
The Franciscan Garden will begin its programs on Thursday with the Fire Game, which this time has been subtitled Children of Fire.
In this year's opening attraction, instead of the usual fireworks, special visual elements based on water and light will complement the show of fire dancers and artists, said Stefánia Grünwald.
This year, the garden's programs will be enriched by a Roman-era fashion show, a military costume and weapon display, and a revival of an ancient ball game, harpastum, he added.
Horse archer Lajos Kassai and the Collegium Gladiatorium Cultural Tradition Preservation Association are returning, and in the craft courtyard, a blacksmith, a bronze caster, a herbalist and many other exciting characters await the visitors.
The costumed, torchlight parade – one of the most spectacular elements of the carnival event – is held on Friday and Saturday evenings with hundreds of participants.
The opening concert on the Main Square will traditionally be given by the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, and a varied concert program awaits music lovers from the next day.
The main stage will feature bands such as the Grund Comedy Theater Boys' Band, Besh o droM, Isis Big Band, Péterfy Bori, as well as Analog Balaton and Duckshell.
Between August 14th and 23rd, the Weöres Sándor Theatre will present Carlo Goldoni's work, The Chioggiai Kalamajka, 8 times in the courtyard of the county hall - it was announced at the press conference.
