Recognized as Central Europe’s largest historical reenactment festival, the Savaria Historical Carnival draws history enthusiasts, families, and curious travelers from across Hungary and neighboring Austria for a four-day immersive experience.

Founded by the Emperor Claudius in 45 AD, Savaria was a major crossroads along the Amber Road and the provincial capital of Pannonia Superior.

The carnival honors this rich heritage by turning the modern city center into a living historical landscape. Hundreds of reenactors wearing authentic period attire gather to recreate daily life from antiquity through the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The defining highlight of the festival takes place during the torchlit evening parades, where legionnaires, gladiators, medieval knights, belly dancers, and court jesters march through the streets flanked by spectators.

The Historical Theme Park (Történelmi Témapark) serves as the heart of action daytime demonstrations, hosting mock military drills, archery competitions, and full-scale gladiatorial combat.

Beyond the armor and military tactics, the festival offers broad cultural appeal. The Old Town Market fills central squares with traditional artisans displaying pottery, leatherwork, ironworks, and handwoven textiles.

Food stalls offer traditional regional dishes alongside local wines from the Vas county region. Multiple stages set up around the city feature continuous programming, ranging from early music ensembles and folk dancing to modern world music and street theater acts. For children, dedicated play areas provide hands-on crafts, catapult trials, and interactive puppet shows.

For international residents living in Hungary, visiting Szombathely during carnival weekend provides a accessible window into the region's complex layerings of history. Located roughly two and a half hours by train or car from Budapest, the event offers a distinct alternative to standard summer music festivals.

Many activities, concerts, and street spectacles are open to the public free of charge, making it easy to wander between historic sites like the Iseum Sanctuary and modern plaza gathering spaces.
