Legal Twist: Chief Prosecutor Seizes Control of Central Bank Case in Hungary
- 22 Apr 2026 5:40 PM
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Prosecutor General noted that the police had launched a probe of the NBH on February 10, 2025, on the basis of a report by the State Audit Office (ASZ).
The NBH has come under scrutiny for investments made by its foundations as well as for a renovation of its landmark headquarters.
Commenting on the news, Peter Magyar, the incoming prime minister, faulted the Prosecutor General for doing "too little, too late" by taking over the investigation a year after it was launched.
"The Prosecutor General waited until the thieves who robbed the National Bank made off with the loot, doing nothing," Magyar said in a post on Facebook.
