New 'Historic' Cultural Development Agreement Signed Between Hungary & Romania
- 8 Apr 2026 8:45 AM
At an event held in the ceremonial hall of the Royal Palace in Godollo, near Budapest, Hanko said the government believed that Hungarian culture and the Hungarian mother tongue had no borders, and he cited a 650 billion forints (EUR 1.7bn) in cultural development programme promoting Hungarian culture throughout the Carpathian Basin in the past 10-plus years.
Through the framework agreement, cultural cooperation between the two nations built bridges "strengthening respect and appreciation for each other", he said.
The government, he added, served the entire Carpathian Basin by supporting and promoting theatres in Transylvania, and by providing 65,000 grants to cultural and other Hungarian organisations.
Demeter spoke of the importance of strengthening the process of getting to know each other, and expressed the hope that "culture will not be just a chain of events, but a living presence in the lives of us all."
