The Legacy of Ferenc II Rákóczi

The coin honors Ferenc II Rákóczi on the 350th anniversary of his birth in March 1676. Born into a powerful aristocratic family defined by resistance to Habsburg rule, Rákóczi eventually led the War of Independence (1703–1711).

This uprising united diverse social classes—nobles and peasants alike—in a shared struggle for national sovereignty.

Although the war concluded with the Treaty of Szatmár and Rákóczi’s subsequent exile, he remains a cornerstone of Hungarian national identity. While his portrait is a familiar sight on the 500-forint banknote, this release marks the first time in several decades that his image has appeared on a coin intended for everyday use.

A Rare Numismatic Event

This release is particularly notable for its rarity. Over the last century, Rákóczi’s portrait has appeared on a circulating coin only once before — a silver 2-pengő piece minted in 1935. The nearly 100-year gap between these appearances elevates the new 50-forint piece from a routine issue to a genuine historical event.

The design features an equestrian portrait of Rákóczi, adapted from the work of sculptor and medallist Lajos Berán. For the higher-value collector versions, the design also includes Rákóczi’s princely seal and a profile based on the famous 1712 portrait by Ádám Mányoki.

How to Find the New Coin

The MNB has issued one million of these special 50-forint coins. Because they have been released directly into the cash payment system, they are appearing as change in shops, markets, and cafés across the country. For expats and visitors, discovering one of these in a coin tray offers a unique, zero-cost memento of Hungarian history.

For those who prefer a guaranteed uncirculated version, the Hungarian Mint (Magyar Pénzverő Zrt.) offers several collector-grade options:

* First-Day Strikes: 12,000 individually numbered coins in sealed packaging, priced at 3,400 forints.
* Coin Rolls: Rolls of 50 coins available for 7,500 forints (limited to three per person).
* Silver and Non-Ferrous Editions: High-denomination versions with face values of 40,000 and 6,000 forints are also available for dedicated collectors.

The Practicality of Cash in Hungary

While digital payments are standard in major establishments, Budapest remains a city where cash is frequently necessary. Smaller vendors, traditional market stalls, and some local transport services often rely on forints. This ongoing use of physical currency means that every cash transaction currently serves as a small opportunity to find a commemorative coin.

This release follows a similar successful launch in 2025, which celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Such issues typically spark significant public interest, often leading to virtual queues on the Mint’s website.
