Hungary Could Join Eurozone in 2033 at Earliest - Equilor
Hungary could adopt the euro in 2033, at the earliest, independent brokerage Equilor said in an analysis on Thursday.

While Hungary met none of the Maastricht criteria for eurozone accession in 2025, in 2026 the country has met the inflation criterion and has moved closer to meeting the criterion for long-term interest rates, said chief analyst Peter Aradvanyi.

The "biggest obstacle" remains the fiscal criteria, he added.

If Hungary undertakes a rapid fiscal consolidation and can enter the ERM II — the waiting room for the eurozone — by 2030, it could adopt the common currency in 2033, at the earliest, Aradvanyi said.

Equilor's analysts expect Hungary's eurozone accession to benefit the equities market by reducing exchange rate risks and making the bourse more attractive to foreign investors.

Equilor puts GDP growth around 2.5pc in 2027 and 2028. The brokerage's analysts augur an HUF/EUR exchange rate of 360-370.
