Media Law Amendment Expected in Hungary Within Weeks
- 19 Jun 2026 12:20 PM
The amendment "is intended to give us access to public media so that the leaders who are currently obstructing the transformation of public media can be removed from their positions. We have appointed a ministerial commissioner who will coordinate the process of transforming public media, with a particular emphasis on dialogue with civil society organizations and professional associations," Zoltan Tarr said in the video.
The goal is to create a public media system that is truly capable of serving the public, "one that is credible, objective, and informative", he said.
"It will entertain and, above all, contribute to restoring the emotional and intellectual wellbeing of Hungarian society after those 16 years, the devastation of which we still feel every day."
"We hope that the amendment to the media law will pass through parliament within a few weeks, and then we will have the opportunity to usher in a new era and a new chapter in the life of public media, at the end of which we will be able to select a new leader for public media through a competitive selection process," the minister said.
