'Manga Day', Museum of Ethnography in Budapest, 25 July
- 10 Jul 2026 3:11 PM
Following the strong response to the spring event, this summer’s programme aims to create a dynamic connection between centuries-old Japanese traditions and contemporary pop culture.
The event is closely linked to the museum’s current exhibition, “Manga – Hokusai – Manga: Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics,” offering visitors an opportunity to explore Japan’s rich visual culture in depth.
Through expert lectures, curator-led tours and open discussions, the programme highlights the enduring influence of the legendary artist Katsushika Hokusai, whose more than 200-year-old body of work continues to shape modern manga.
A key focus of the day is hands-on participation. In addition to observing, visitors are invited to engage directly with elements of Japanese culture through a range of interactive activities.
Workshops will introduce traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing and Japanese calligraphy, while creative sessions offer the chance to design fans using either classic Japanese patterns or contemporary anime-inspired motifs.
The programme also includes an introduction to gesture painting, along with the opportunity to try on a yukata, a lightweight summer kimono, providing insight into both artistic expression and traditional dress.
The lecture programme spans a wide variety of topics, reflecting both historical and contemporary perspectives.
Presentations will explore the world of yokai, the supernatural beings of Japanese folklore, as well as the history of manga publishing in Hungary, the development of modern otaku culture, and the long-standing traditions of Japanese puppetry.
Throughout the day, additional attractions will contribute to the atmosphere, including pop-up exhibitions, video games and performances of traditional Japanese “paper play,” known as kamishibai, presented in the original language.
For those seeking a quieter experience, the event also offers opportunities to step away from the busier programme elements.
Introductory sessions on Zen Buddhism, meditative performances on the shakuhachi bamboo flute and calm, focused calligraphy workshops are designed to create a more reflective environment.
The day will conclude with a lively finale, combining a modern anime music concert with the powerful rhythms of traditional Japanese taiko drumming, bringing Manga Day to a close with a strong visual and musical impact.
