Mud Traps Exposed by Receding Waters in Hungary

A 35-year-old woman had to be freed after she got stuck in the mud of the shrinking Lake Velence late Wednesday evening. A Gárdony police officer who had just gone off duty heard the report via the police radio, and went to help the woman.
The officer went to the lake and with the help of another man pulled the woman from the lake bed. Meanwhile, arriving police officers and paramedics took the woman to hospital.
Police warned that nobody should try to cross the lake on foot not even if the water appears to be shallow.
A similar case occurred in late July when a man who tried to walk across Lake Velence also sank in the mud and water police had to rescue him.
Meanwhile, Sziget Visitors Warned Against Wading Through Danube
Despite unprecedentedly low water levels on the Danube, wading through the river from the Buda side to reach Hajogyari Island, the venue for Budapest's annual Sziget Festival, could be a life-threatening adventure, the government warned on its website on Saturday.
The police have cordoned off the area and put out warning signs. They will also patrol the site during the festival, held between Aug 11-15, the website said.
British, French, Slovak, Dutch police on duty at Sziget
British, French, Slovak and Dutch police officers are assisting the work of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) at this year's Sziget Festival, a BRFK spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"We are cooperating with the Civil Guard, the Standby Police and the Metropolitan Municipality's Law Enforcement Directorate to provide external security for the event," Soma Csecsi told a press conference held at K-bridge which is the entrance to the festival grounds.
"Plainclothes police detectives are also involved in internal security, and if they detect any offences or criminal acts, they will take the necessary measures," he said.
He added that police presence will be maintained also on the River Danube throughout the festival.
A police "Prevention Point" is operating on the island, providing information on crime prevention and accident prevention through interactive programmes, he said. This year's programmes focus on sport, drug prevention and cyber security, he added.
