Mayor: Budapest 'Returns to Normality' from September 1

From September 1, companies in the capital managed by the municipal council will operate according to their original working hours as power supply has been restored and restrictions are lifted, Gergely Karacsony, Budapest's mayor, said in a post on social media on Sunday.

Karacsony said that during the days of heat and extreme drought, Budapest also adapted to the extraordinary situation, with companies in the capital introducing energy and water saving measures, while the local government sought to ensure that public services operated as normal.

Energy consumption was limited in public transport and in companies in the capital. Trees were protected with more economical irrigation and water consumption was reduced, and the capital's decorative lighting was temporarily turned off, along with fountains and the waterfall on Gellert Hill.

Karacsony said all of this shows that Budapest can respond unitedly and responsibly to the increasingly extreme consequences of climate change.

The Mayor’s Office pess department said in a separate statement that different driving protocols of trams and metro trains in August helped the Budapest Transport Centre BKK and transport company BKV save 1,016 MW of energy.

In addition to reducing the energy consumption of the escalators in the metro stations, BKK also reduced the electricity consumption of its office building by about 20 percent.

The Budapest Public Services (BKM) company saved almost 20 MWh of energy by suspending all decorative lighting in the capital and the total affect of all its savings measures amounted to 120 MWh.

Some 25,000 cubic meters of water was conserved by temporarily shutting down fountains.
