Private Fund Associated with Hungarian Oligarch Returns Billions to Central Budget
Prime Tech, a private fund associated with businessman Lőrinc Mészáros, has repaid nearly 2.3 billion forints (EUR 6.3m) to the central budget in wake of a probe into a project concerning the electronic toll system, Dávid Vitézy, the minister of transport and investment, said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The previous government used 64.5 billion forints late last year and early in 2026 to buy three key companies in the e-toll system, two of which had been owned by Prime Tech, Vitezy said.

He noted that the acquisition was contested at the time, some questioned if it was necessary at all, others criticised the high price.

A resulting probe revealed that the earlier owner of one of the companies had illegitimately received an interim dividend payment of 2.27 billion forints for last year, which has now been paid back to the central budget, the minister said.

According to Vitezy, "too many" public transport contracts have been signed in recent years "which did not benefit passengers, carriers, or Hungarian taxpayers but a small business circle".

He said the ministry would review "each transaction raising suspicion of using public funds in disregard of the public interest ... wherever a breach of the law is suspected, legal proceedings will ensue and the government will recover Hungarian taxpayers' money."
