Magyar Asks for Immediate Suspension of His Parliamentary Immunity
- 23 Sep 2026 7:03 AM
"We have all just witnessed the last desperate attempt by the prosecution service from the era of [former chief prosecutor Peter] Polt to downplay the regime change and conflate the embezzlement of public funds to the tune of 10-100 billion forints by the Orban mafia with the politically motivated character assassination attempts launched against me in 2024, which have already failed multiple times," Magyar said in a video on Facebook on Tuesda, 22 September evening.
He said he would request a special session of parliament as soon as the immunity suspension requests are received, "so that we do not have to wait a single minute longer for Balazs Hanko and Miklos Sesztak to truly move up a level in the Road to Prison programme."
According to a statement issued by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in September 2024, Magyar was at a club in Budapest in the early hours of June 21, 2024, when he took the mobile phone from a man who was filming him, and "deliberately dropped it into the Danube".
At the time of the offence, Magyar was an MEP, so Peter Polt, the chief public prosecutor at the time, submitted a request to the President of the European Parliament to waive his parliamentary immunity.
This was rejected by the European Parliament, and as a result, the KNYF discontinued the proceedings. Following the expiry of Magyar's mandate as an MEP and his resulting parliamentary immunity on May 8 of this year, the KNYF ordered the resumption of the criminal proceedings.
Magyar said he would act the same way today, by "trying to prevent a provocateur hired by those in power from harassing young girls and boys at a nightclub".
The prosecution investigated the case at record speed, Magyar said.
Magyar said that on the night in question, police leaders -- "clearly acting on political instructions" -- sent three or four divers into the flooding Danube almost immediately upon arriving at the scene.
Their alleged task was to locate a phone supposedly dropped into the river, he said, noting that the divers had no protective equipment. He argued this endangered the divers' safety; further, the divers' role should be to save lives in emergencies.
Magyar said he would file a complaint against those issuing the instructions for endangering others in the course of their duties and abuse of official authority. The investigation would reveal which minister had issued the order, he said.
"The Chief Prosecutor's Office reached a new low with its announcement, demonstrating why Hungary needed a complete overhaul of the prosecution service, including transparency and accountability," he said.
He also said he would not be surprised if "Polt's prosecutor mafia" had been behind the immunity request, "those who were involved in the bailiff scandal linked to Antal Rogan and the deletion of incriminating evidence against Viktor Orban's minister from investigative files".
If the Tisza Party had its way, he said, a new chief prosecutor would be in place within three weeks, with one of their tasks being to "hold accountable and bring to court the corrupt prosecutors who for years aided and protected the mafia".
"My conscience is clear. I stand before the authorities with joy and a sense of pride, as this too draws attention to the prosecution's responsibility in upholding the mafia state for years," the prime minister said.
