Xpat Interview: Peter Johnson, Vice President for Student Services at Central European University
Peter Johnson is Vice President for Student Services at Central European University, where he oversees the student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student records & registration, student life, and psychological counseling departments.

Prior to joining CEU, Peter was Executive Director of MBA Admissions at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where he led world-wide student recruitment for Berkeley top-ranked graduate business programs for over ten years.

Prior to Berkeley, he held a variety of positions in higher education including admissions and international student advising roles.

He has served on the selection committee for the US State Department's Edmund Muskie Fellowship Program, and has presented frequently at the Graduate Management Admissions Council and NAFSA: Association of International Educators annual conferences.

Peter holds an MA degree in International Relations from Golden Gate University and a B.A. degree in modern languages from Pacific University. As a BA student, Peter spent a year on exchange at the Universität Wien and first visited Budapest in 1982. He also lived in northern Italy for a year as a high school exchange student.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in Hungary in August 2010. A great job offer from an interesting institution is what attracted me, and the opportunity to live in Budapest was a plus.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I spent a year in Vienna, and a year living in a small town in northern Italy.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The diversity of things to see and do!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
I've had many visitors since coming to Budapest, and I always recommend a soak at either the Szechenyi or Rudas baths and a night-time boat cruise on the Danube.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Dobos Torte

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
A good bottle of dry furmint.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Gyógyfürdő

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Good avocados

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Safari guide

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Pest exterminator

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Stockholm, Sweden

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Croatia

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The Eagles (band)

14. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?
Gelato

15. Red wine or white?
Do I have to choose?

16. Book or movie?
Movie

17. Morning person or night person?
I'm very much a night person.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Protecting the rights of minority groups.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest, although Buda is lovely.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Keep it simple.
