Considering Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent pledge to create a workfare state, it may seem odd that Hungarians are to get a slew of new national holidays. However, the 11 new days “of elevated importance” will mean state-coordinated celebrations, but no extra days off work.
Hungarian Pavilion At Milan Expo To Cost 4.7bn Forints

The Hungarian government will spend a 4.7 billion forints on the pavilion representing the country at the 2015 World Expo in Milan, government commissioner Géza Szőcs said on Tuesday. The planned pavilion will “powerfully present Hungary’s themes, and the design is appreciated by both the Italian press and architects,” he said.

Jobbik is moving to get Parliament to declare December 24 a holiday, spokesman Ádám Mirkóczki announced on Thursday. He said an amendment to that effect could meet “a decades-long social need” as little serious work is done in the vast majority of workplaces on December 24.

Hungary’s media authority (NMHH) has decided to provide funding for the making of 16 documentaries and nine popular science films from this year’s budget. Among the documentaries, Csaba Bartal’s piece analyses the political aspects of the exile of Hungary’s post-WWII communist leader Mátyás Rákosi and the last 15 years he spent in the Soviet Union.
