He said that growth in the second quarter could be attributed to government policymaking, since EU payments only kicked in after that.

Brussels has “attacked” Hungary’s plan to cut VAT on internet subscriptions, Bence Tuzson, cabinet state secretary for government communications, told a news conference. He noted that the European Commission had not approved the government’s plan to reduce VAT next year on accessing the internet from 27% to 18%. The government will continue to fight for this cause, he added.

Moody’s Upgrades Hungary’s Banking System Outlook To Positive

Ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service upgraded the outlook of Hungary’s banking system to positive, the rating agency said today in a report entitled “Banking System Outlook - Hungary”. Moodyʼs noted, however, that government support for banks in the EU, including Hungary, is less certain under the provisions of the EUʼs Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive.

The European Commission has sued Hungary at the European Court of Justice due to the government’s failure to comply with the EU law on the free movement of capital, it was announced on Thursday. Hungary passed a law in December 2013 terminating existing 20-year land lease contracts within five months with no compensation payable. These contracts were terminated on May 1, 2014.
