The Budapest metropolitan council will open a new venue where "the independent cultural organizations abandoned by the state" can create and perform, Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, said in a statement on the occasion of the Day of Hungarian Culture.

A statue of Hungarian-born former US Congressman Tom Lantos was unveiled in central Budapest near his school on Thursday, marking the day of his birth.

Gábor Czene of Népszabadság conducted an interview with Tamás Fabiny, bishop of the northern district of the Hungarian Lutheran Church. Fabiny was ordained in Erlangen, Germany in 1982. He also studied in the United States. In addition to his church activities he worked for Duna TV. Since 2010 he has been the vice chairman of the Lutheran World Federation.
