Updated: Highest-Level Heat Warning Extended Across Hungary Until Friday
- 5 Aug 2026 10:53 AM
Persistent heat is expected to continue over the coming days, a joint statement by the national centre for public health and the national directorate-general for disaster management said today.
"It is particularly important during this period to look after our own health and look out for one another," it added.
The elderly, young children, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions -- particularly cardiovascular and respiratory conditions - those with metabolic disorders, and outdoor workers are particularly at risk, the statement said.
Earlier:
A joint statement from the National Centre for Public Health and the National Directorate General for Disaster Management on Tuesday warned that prolonged heat poses a significant health risk, and urged everyone to pay extra attention to their own health and that of their dependents.
They added that to prevent heat-related illnesses, it is especially important to stay hydrated, primarily by drinking water. They advised avoiding alcohol, high-caffeine drinks, and sugary beverages.
They recommended that during the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm, people should stay in cool places if possible and avoid strenuous physical activity.
They also suggested shading homes, ventilating them at night, and wearing light, light-coloured clothing, headwear, and sunglasses with UV protection.
Forecasts indicate that daytime temperatures in many parts of Hungary may exceed 35°C, with tropical nights offering little relief.
The prolonged heat is expected to place additional strain on healthcare services, transport infrastructure and agriculture, while also increasing the risk of wildfires in dry areas.
Authorities are reminding everyone to check regularly on elderly relatives, neighbours and anyone living alone, ensure pets have constant access to fresh water and shade, and never leave children or animals unattended in parked vehicles, even for a short time.
The third-level heat alert is currently scheduled to remain in effect until midnight on Tuesday, although it could be extended if extreme temperatures persist.
Heat alert - Karacsony: Budapest providers prepared for prolonged heat
Budapest’s service providers and institutions are ready for the sustained heat, Gergely Karacsony, the capital’s mayor, said on Facebook on Wednesday, adding that forecasts suggest the heatwave will last until at least next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Despite record-low water levels in the Danube, the Budapest Waterworks can still secure the city’s drinking water supply, so no restrictions are needed, he said. Karacsony also said emergency wells would be operational by Thursday, with deployment already under way.
The city has also started installing emergency wells, which are expected to be operational by Thursday, he said.
Further, the municipality is ready to start spraying tram rails if necessary. Asphalt works will be transferred to night shifts as long as the third-degree heat alert is in force, he added.
