The Constitutional Court has struck down a provision of the new civil code due to enter into force on March 15, that would restrict criticism of public figures, the court announced on Tuesday. The Court stated that the provision violates the rights to freedom of speech and a free press.

The European Commission is examining Hungary’s land law, and if it finds it incompatible with EU law it will take steps to urge its amendment. Austrian Farm Minister Andrä Rupprechter complained to his Hungarian counterpart, Sándor Fazekas, about the law which, when it is enforced in May, will strip Austrian farmers of their rights to benefit from Hungarian farmland.

According to its latest report Freedom in the World 2014, Hungary scored 1, the best score, for political rights and it kept its score of 2 for civil liberties for the third year in a row. Countries with a score of 1-2,5 are ranked as free countries.
