Hungarian Constitutional Court Rejects Limits On Criticism Of Public Figure
The Constitutional Court has struck down a provision of the new civil code due to enter into force on March 15, that would restrict criticism of public figures, the court announced on Tuesday. The Court stated that the provision violates the rights to freedom of speech and a free press.

The new civil code passed last year states that criticism of public figures would be allowed only if it was of legitimate public interest, did not harm human dignity and was “necessary and proportionate”.

However, the Court stated in its ruling that free social debate is a constitutional interest of outstanding importance.
