The main work in this concert will be the Hungarian première of the exquisite In Terra Pax by Gerald Finzi (1901-1956). Subtitled A Christmas Scene, it is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir and small orchestra, and sets familiar words from St. Luke's Gospel with poetry by Robert Bridges (1844-1930).

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was popularized at King’s College, Cambridge, by the then Dean Eric Milner-White. The music at that first service in Cambridge in 1918 was directed by Arthur Henry Mann and was first broadcast by the BBC in 1928.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King's College, after experience as an army chaplain which had convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship.

The Gabrieli Choir is the only choir in Hungary to specialize in the study and performance of Anglican cathedral music. This international group rehearses weekly (Sunday evenings, from 5 to 8 pm) in Budapest’s 5th district, and gives concerts in some of Budapest’s finest churches. The choir’s Musical Director is Richárd Sólyom

Evening Prayer, or Evensong as it is generally called when sung, is one of the Church’s “Offices,” or official prayers. It derives from the Vespers and Compline of medieval monasteries when monks or nuns would gather to bid a prayerful farewell to the day just past and prepare for a night’s rest.
