Festival Of Nine Lessons & Carols, Budapest, 19 December
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was popularized at King’s College, Cambridge, by the then Dean Eric Milner-White. The music at that first service in Cambridge in 1918 was directed by Arthur Henry Mann and was first broadcast by the BBC in 1928.

The format of those early services did not differ substantially from that familiar to us today. Scriptural lessons, or readings, are interspersed with music and carols.

Our service in Budapest has become an annual ecumenical event which we celebrate with Saint Columba’s Scottish Presbyterian Church. This year’s service will, as in recent years, again take place at Saint Columba’s, arguable the oldest – and perhaps in some sense most sacred -- British and English-language worship site in Hungary.

Plan now to join with fellow parishioners and friends as well as members of Saint Columba’s – our “sister” congregation -- for our service this season.

Our music will be provided by the renowned Gabrieli Choir of Budapest under the direction of Richárd Sólyom. They will be joined by the enthusiastic young voices of the Exsultate Boys’ Choir of Budapest under the direction of choirmaster Márton Tóth.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to introduce friends and neighbours to this enriching and stirring service in the days before Christmas itself. Again as at Evensong, there is no sermon at Lessons & Carols. A free-will offering is asked. The service lasts approximately
