Interested In Singing Sacred Music In Hungary?

The choir’s core repertoire comprises English/Anglican music from the 16th century right up to the present day (for example: Tallis and Byrd; Purcell and Handel; Parry and Stanford; Bairstow and Howells; Taverner and Rutter). Much as in England, older works are often juxtaposed with modern ones, and similarly Anglo-Saxon with European music (e.g. Bach, Fauré, Kodály, and Poulenc, to name but a few composers). Concert programmes are consistently arranged within the overall context of the Anglican tradition.
Besides championing such music, the choir has also recently achieved notable successes in partnership with other choirs and musical organizations. These have included the Princeton University Chapel Choir from the United States, the Lux Aeterna Budapest Bach Consort and soloists, and more recently Will Todd’s exuberant Mass in Blue (complete with jazz band and soprano soloist) and a performance of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Concerto Chamber Orchestra.
The choir’s most recent performances were as part of two church services related to Palm Sunday: a Choral Evensong on Saturday 23rd March 2013 and a Palm Sunday Service on Sunday 24th March 2013 at which the Gabrieli Choir gave the Hungarian première of the Truro Canticles by the young British composer Philip Stopford (b. 1977) along with motets by the Tudor composer Richard Farrant (c.1525-1580) and the twentieth century composer Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988)
A New Year Begins
Rehearsals have resumed after the summer break and an exciting season is anticipated. Around the holiday of All Saints’ Day, the choir has been invited to perform Duruflé’s beautiful Requiem with full orchestra. In the run up to Christmas the choir will sing in an Advent Evensong and, as has become a tradition, will be performing at the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches’ annual Carol Service.
If you are an experienced singer, are good at sight-reading, and would enjoy the challenge offered by studying and performing exciting English-language repertoire, the choir would be happy to hear from you. There are currently vacancies in the soprano, tenor and bass sections.
